The Reformed General Sales Tax Bill was introduced in the National Assembly and the Senate of Pakistan by the Federal Minister of Finance, Revenue, Economic Affairs, Statistics and Planning & Development Senator Dr. Abdul Hafeez Sheikh on November 12, 2010. The bill was referred on the same day to the Standing Committees on the Finance and Revenue of the National Assembly and the Senate. The Senate Standing Committee on Finance and Revenue, after reviewing the bill, passed a set of recommendations on November 26, 2010 and these recommendations were referred to the National Assembly of Pakistan. The bill is at the Committee stage in the National Assembly of Pakistan. The RGST was earlier introduced as the Federal Value Added Tax Bill 2010 in the National Assembly of Pakistan on February 24, 2010 and in the Senate of Pakistan on February 26, 2010. However, the bill ran into opposition inside and outside the Parliament and was later introduced as the RGST bill.
