Context:

On July 10, 2019, Minister of Human Rights appointed Mir Iftikhar Ahmed as a Focal Person on the issue of human rights in Sindh. However, a FIR exists against him on suspicion of physically assaulting his driver. While not denying that such a FIR exists, Minister for Human Rights, Dr. Shireen Mazari, claimed on July 13, 2019, that Mir Iftikhar Ahmed had been cleared of all charges.

Claim:

Mir Iftikhar Ahmed, accused of abusing driver, “cleared of charges”

Claimant:

Minister for Human Rights, Dr. Shireen Mazari

Status:

False

Sources:

Sessions case no 128 of 2019. The State vs Shafique Ahmed & Others. Order Dated 27/05/2019. Order in Sessions Court, Ghotki, shows that charges were withdrawn on the basis of an out of court settlement, rather than by acquittal.

Report/Ruling:

The verified Sindh High Court document states that “By this order, I propose to dispose of an application …  on the ground that they have been patched up and resolved their dispute outside the court.”

This document proves that, while Mir Iftikhar Ahmed was not convicted, Minister for Human Rights has misrepresented facts by tweeting that he was “cleared” of charges.
