While Pakistan prepared to make a transition towards democracy in October 2002, several issues relating to the sustainability of the new system were uppermost in the minds of all those with an interest in the affairs of Pakistan. PILDAT organised the two-day conference on “Towards a Sustainable Democracy” from July 22-23, 2002 in order to promote an informed debate on the issue and enhance public awareness. The conference consisted of five sessions titled ‘Learning from the Past’, ‘Assuring Free, Fair and Transparent Elections’, ‘Strengthening Democratic Institutions’, ‘International Experiences in Sustaining Democracy’ and ‘The Way Forward’. These proceedings contain the speeches, presentations and papers presented at the conference, as well as transcripts of the Q&A sessions among the speakers and participants at the conference.
