A Partisan President

Dr. Arif Alvi was handpicked by Prime Minister of Pakistan, Mr. Imran Khan, to be elected as 13th President of Pakistan in September 2018. His Constitutional term as President ended on September 8, 2023 but in the absence of electoral college for election of the President, he would continue to be in office until the Constitutional requirements are met for next President’s election and a new President is sworn in.

After the legal ouster of Mr. Imran Khan as Prime Minister through a successful vote of no confidence against him on April 10, 2022, President Alvi, who was required by the Constitution to represent the unity of the Republic, increasingly acted like a partisan President belonging to the PTI.

This Issue Paper compiles some of the incidents where Dr. Alvi chose to act on behalf of the PTI as opposed to playing a role on behalf of the State.
