PM assures massive support for regional peace
On June 27, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, while addressing the passing-out parade at the Pakistan Naval Academy, reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to regional peace, dialogue and diplomacy. He highlighted Pakistan’s role as a mediator in facilitating the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding between the United States and Iran and commended the Pakistan Navy’s professionalism during Operation Bunyanum Marsoos and Operation Muhafizul Bahr in safeguarding maritime security and ensuring uninterrupted energy supplies.[1]
Brazilian journalist claims Israel planned to assassinate Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir
On June 26, Brazilian journalist and geopolitical analyst Pepe Escobar claimed that Pakistan’s military intelligence had intercepted an alleged Israeli plot to target Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) & Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), during the June 21–22 United States–Iran peace talks in Switzerland. The claim alleged Mossad involvement and stated that Pakistan had issued a warning through intermediaries. However, the claim was not confirmed by either Israel or Pakistan, and Pakistan’s Foreign Office denied the reports.[2]
Pakistan’s mediation efforts result in historic peace talks and deal between Iran and US
In June 2026, the United States and Iran advanced towards a formal peace agreement following months of indirect negotiations, with Pakistan and Qatar serving as principal mediators. On June 12, Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Mr. Shahbaz Sharif announced that the draft US-Iran agreement has been finalized. On June 14, US President, Mr. Trump announced that the U.S.–Iran peace deal was “complete” and both countries confirmed agreement on the text of the 14 pointer Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).[3] On June 17, the Presidents of the United States and Iran reportedly signed the 14-point Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also signed the MoU as a mediator on behalf of Pakistan.[4] On June 21–22, senior United States and Iranian officials held negotiations at the Bürgenstock Resort, Switzerland, with Pakistan and Qatar as principal mediators. The talks focused on implementing the 14-point Islamabad MoU, including a ceasefire, sanctions relief, and Iran’s nuclear programme. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to continued dialogue. US Vice President J.D. Vance commended Pakistan’s mediation efforts and praised Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir’s leadership.[5]
