The Background Paper on Judicial Crisis has been prepared for the PILDAT-facilitated Dialogue Group on Civil-Military Relations in order to capture the essence of Judicial Crisis that engulfed the country in the aftermath of Gen. Pervez Musharraf attempting to remove the Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry on March 09, 2007. This move sparked a controversy and a crisis as the lawyers’ community took to the streets of the country against the removal of the Chief Justice and the manner in which it was handled by the Government led by Gen. Musharraf. Authored by Mr. Shahid Hamid, Senior Advocate Supreme Court of Pakistan and Former Governor Punjab, the paper was presented at the meeting of Dialogue Group on Civil-Military Relations on May 08, 2007 and therefore carries the development up to the date of the meeting. However, a postscript penned on December 15, 2007 was added to the paper by Mr. Shahid Hamid.
