Major Challenges Facing Pakistan and Why Young People Must be Involved in Policy Making and Policy Oversight?

Thursday, August 20, 2020 | 10:00 am
Online Session via Zoom

Pakistan is not only one of the youngest countries in its region, but also in the world. 64% of Pakistan’s population is under the age of 29, compared to the global average of 42%. 30 % of Pakistanis are between the ages of 15 and 29. This means that for at least the next three decades, Pakistan will continue to be a younger country. This provides a critical responsibility on Pakistan to invest in its youth. As the UNDP Pakistan’s National Human Development Report 2017 summarises, youth are a powerful force for transformational change and with their demographic size, and more importantly their fresh ideas and energy, if provided with a conducive environment, Pakistan’s young can lead the way to sustainable human development. In other words, Pakistan’s young could be the engines of development, if facilitated to do so. Or their disillusionment could lead to social unrest. The report identifies that investments in the youth of Pakistan are amongst the best investments that can be made in Pakistan’s future. The three most important investments that can be made to empower Pakistan’s youth are known as 3 Es: Quality Education, Gainful Employment and Meaningful Engagement. The report that gathered insights for transforming the “youth bulge” into a demographic dividend, analysed young people’s voices by consulting more than 130,000 people across Pakistan, of which 90 percent were youth, including marginalized and underprivileged young communities. These young people identified that a crucial lever of transformation and meaningful engagement for social empowerment is about voice, identity, inclusion and citizenship – meaningful social, political and institutional integration of youth into the fabric of society and its collective decisions.
