Political finance is a critical area for any democracy that significantly influences the functioning of its democratic processes. It is regulated through checks and balances on the raising, spending and disclosure of money in politics. This issue paper examines both electoral and non-electoral aspects of political finance in Pakistan, detailing the regulations governing campaign funding, political party finances and financial disclosures by candidates as well as elected representatives. Despite existing laws, challenges remain in compliance and enforcement. Through a detailed review of the current laws, enforcement mechanisms and international practices, this paper concludes with recommendations for further improving political finance regulations in Pakistan. This paper has been authored by Ms. Rameen Durrani, Assistant Projects Officer, and reviewed by Ms. Alena Sadiq, Projects Officer under the overall direction and supervision of Mr. Ahmed Bilal Mehboob, President, who also reviewed the paper.
